Kibeho is a small town in southern Rwanda famous for reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ.
The Apparitions of Our Lady of Kibeho
- When: Between 1981 and 1989.
- Who: Three schoolgirls—Alphonsine Mumureke, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka, and Marie-Claire Mukangango—reported visions of the Virgin Mary, who called herself “Nyina wa Jambo” (Mother of the Word).
- Message: The visions emphasized repentance, sincere prayer, fasting, and the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows.
- Prophecy: The visionaries also reported seeing a terrifying vision of rivers of blood, which was later understood as a prophetic warning of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
- Church Approval: In 2001, the Vatican officially approved the apparitions as authentic, making it the only recognized Marian apparition site in Africa.
Pilgrimage and History
- Shrine: Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Kibeho every year, especially around Assumption Day on August 15.
- Tragedy: The town is also known for the tragic Kibeho Massacre in April 1995, where thousands of displaced people were killed at a camp by the Rwandan Patriotic Army
