Nairobi, Kenya
Kenya, officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country located in East Africa. With an estimated population of more than 54.2 million as of mid-2026, it is the world’s 26th-most populous country and the seventh-most populous in Africa. Kenya’s capital and largest city is Nairobi. The second-largest and oldest city is Mombasa, a port city located on Mombasa Island. Other major cities include Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret. Going clockwise, Kenya is bordered by South Sudan to the northwest, Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the east, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, Tanzania to the southwest, and Lake Victoria and Uganda to the west. Its geography, climate and population vary. In western Rift Valley counties, the landscape includes cold, snow-capped mountaintops (such as Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana on Mount Kenya) with surrounding forests, wildlife, and fertile agricultural regions in temperate climates. Other areas have dry, arid, and semi-arid climates, as well as deserts (such as the Chalbi Desert and Nyiri Desert). On 12 December 1964, the Republic of Kenya was proclaimed, and Jomo Kenyatta became Kenya’s first president.
Most Kenyans are Christian (85.5%), with 33.4% Protestant, 20.6% Catholic and 20.4% Evangelical. The Catholic Church is the largest single Christian church in Kenya, with about 10 million members. The Presbyterian Church of East Africa has 3 million followers in Kenya and surrounding countries. Smaller conservative Reformed churches include the Africa Evangelical Presbyterian Church, the Independent Presbyterian Church in Kenya, and the Reformed Church of East Africa. Orthodox Christianity has 621,200 adherents. Kenya has by far the highest number of Quakers of any country in the world, with around 146,300. The country’s only Jewish synagogue is in Nairobi.
Islam is the second largest religion, comprising 11% of the population. 60% of Kenyan Muslims live in the Coastal Region, which makes up 50% of the country’s population, while the upper part of Kenya’s Eastern Region is home to 10% of the country’s Muslims, where they are the majority religious group. Indigenous beliefs are practised by 0.7% of the population, although many self-identifying Christians and Muslims maintain some traditional beliefs and customs. Nonreligious Kenyans are 1.6% of the population. Some Hindus also live in Kenya. The number is estimated at around 60,287, or 0.13% of the population.
